Qualifications
You are a paralegal, attorney or court clerk/judge who has strong ability to interpret & practice Trust & Estates law, but often find yourself preferring to build relationships & collaborating with others instead of spending ~10hrs reading tax code & trust law (it's okay §2031, we 💜 you).
You have a foundational appreciation & respect for the functional role of case law precedence, balanced by an optimistic curiosity for pushing boundaries and gradually expanding the frontiers of the legal industry. You firmly believe that the affordable access to law is a fundamental, constitutional right and are dismayed that modern societal & technological advancements have done little to ensure that occurs at scale. You wholeheartedly agree there are incredible opportunities for emerging technological advancements to improve & further democratize affordable access to legal aid— but agree that scalable distribution & access to law should not be misunderstood or mis-marketed to imply practice of law.
You have a deep operational understanding of probate court processes, roles/personnel, technology/softwares used internally and the sense of general office culture(s). Despite being a government-led entity, if the probate court was a privately-owned business you'd have a firm understanding of current best practices, as well as known opportunities to improve scalability and operational efficiencies. You have a strong network of probate court contacts and an innate ability to foster a genuine rapport with more of the same.
You have experience with:
- Prior experience working with or for probate court(s)
- Hands-on experience navigating & advising clients through probate & estate settlement process(es)
- Trust & Estates specializations including: Trust Law, Tax Law, Fiduciary Law, Estate Planning, Estate Settlement, Asset Ownership & Titling Law
- Successfully networking across many legal professions like: attorneys, paralegals, court clerks & judges, & other administrative professionals
- Tasteful ability to translate relationships & conversations into identifying new product or business opportunities
- Strong familiarity with UPL and interpreting related case law precedence (i.e. concern for consumer protection vs. true UPL)
- Proficiency using & collaborating across modern software platforms like: Social platforms, Slack, Trello, Google Suite, Microsoft Office, etc.)
- T&E legal knowledge required, but role does not engage in practice of law
- JD, paralegal, or equivalent legal training
Bonus points for interest or experience with:
- Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school in the U.S.
- Reviewing & preparing miscellaneous contracts, policies, form language & other legalese
- Advising as internal legal counsel and/or working alongside external counsel team(s)
- Experience working for a startup (pre-Series A/B stage)
- Experience working across fintech, insuretech or legaltech industries
- Content writing and tastefully translating legalese into a digestible consumer-oriented voice & tone
- Understanding frontier & emerging legal trends/disruptors like: DAOs, Smart Contracts, Blockchain, etc.
