About visiting the probate court

About visiting the Passaic County Surrogate's Ct

The term probate court is a common term loosely referring to the probate division located within a state or county courthouse. In the state of New Jersey, the Surrogate Court is the level of court responsible for overseeing matters related to probate court.

Passaic County Surrogate's Ct is listed as a registered probate court within Passaic County, New Jersey.

In most instances within New Jersey, there is at least one Surrogate Court courthouse location within each county. Sometimes a county may have multiple courthouses and may also have multiple probate court locations. Such is often the case in larger metropolis counties where population is dense or also in spread-out, rural counties, which may use a courthouse annex or satellite office system to accommodate nearby citizens with easier access in proximity or distance.

About visiting the probate court

Who to speak with when visiting the Passaic County probate court

Upon visiting the Passaic County Surrogate's Ct, look for signs or directions to the probate division within the main courthouse. Once you’ve located the probate division, make your way to any reception desks and ask to speak with a probate clerk or probate judge. The probate clerk at Passaic County Surrogate's Ct may or may not require appointments based upon the busyness of the probate court, so it’s a great idea to call ahead.

Plan ahead to be early in case available parking is limited and be prepared for formal security measures upon entering the building, as courthouses are official state and federal property. This generally includes passing through metal detectors and allowing search of any belongings.

Many courthouses do not allow cell phones, so keep that in mind as your phone may need to be turned off upon entering the courthouse, or even left outside.

I simply cannot say enough good things about my experience with this court. Judge Bernice Toledo and the group of compassionate and professional individuals on the surrogate court staff—particularly Ms. Valerie Carter—are stellar. I had a time sensitive, urgent matter that was truly life or death and I was treated with tremendous empathy, kindness, and urgency. I felt heard and seen, and most importantly—safe. Though I don’t know much about the inner workings of the law, I realized I could trust this court to help my family in our time of need. Perhaps the most glowing review I can offer is this: one year after my experience with Judge Toledo, I continue to hold her in my prayers. Her Honor and Ms. Carter moved mountains for me in ways I was sure were impossible, and yet she tirelessly pressed on until my family was able to get the matter at hand resolved. As a cancer patient, time is of the essence to me and she respected my situation and turned things from bleak to beautiful. Not a week goes by that I am not grateful and think of her graciousness and the gift of her expertise and remarkable care. I only wish I could give a ten star review, or for that matter, infinite stars!

I am not even sure how to word my gratitude toward Judge Bernice Toledo and her staff, especially her Principal Court Clerk Valerie Carter. My wife was diagnosed with stage four cancer just two months after our engagement. It was her wish to get married right away, especially for legal and medical matters. Judge Toledo and Ms. Carter had to literally run throughout the court building to try and find me and help us facilitate this the day before Corona lockdown. I thought it would be impossible to set this in motion, but the court was able to get us the proper forms and documents and we were married soon thereafter. Judge Toledo even followed up to check on my wife, out of concern and pure human kindness. How can I ever say enough thanks for that? My wife is doing well now, and it is a miracle. We are planning a real wedding and were so moved by Judge Toledo's compassion we are even going to send her an invitation! How could we not? She made our dream come true.

Today my wife and I not only celebrate Christmas together but share our 3 month wedding anniversary! I want to thank Judge Bernice Toledo for making our special day a memorable and seamless experience! She recommended us venues to get married, walked us through the process, and ceremony. She personalized our ceremony with the experiences we told her. She was fun and very sweet, and she lead us to our most important day in our lives. Thank you again Judge Bernice Toledo for making our special day happen! I’d recommend anybody who wants to get married during this pandemic to do so, we only have one life to live!

Judge Bernice Toledo is a truly amazing person. She performed our wedding this November 6, 2020 and did a wonderful job. In the midst of a Pandemic, she went above and beyond everyones expectations. We thought it was going to be a simple signing of the marriage certificate however, she went far beyond that making it an unforgettable experience. My father even got to walk me down the hallway before he gave me away to join my husband to be. Furthermore, she performed the ceremony in two different languages to accommodate my husband's parents. The ceremony was so magical, filled with love and happiness. We wanted to give thanks to you again Judge Bernice. We truly appreciate the time you took of your busy schedule to marry us. It was an amazing experience and you made it perfect. We had so many compliments about your service. I am so glad we chose you to perform our marriage. You went above and beyond what we expected. Thank you so much. We will be sure to refer you to everyone we know. Once again thank you so much for that amazing experience! Nathalie and Antonio DiGiano

My Mother recently passed and I needed to get her will probated to close out her affairs. Given how hard everything has become due to the pandemic restrictions on person to person contact I was expecting a difficult time getting this taken care of. Nothing could be further from the truth; Judge Toledo and her team (especially Ms. Assaf and Ms. Lora that I dealt with) made a fairly intricate process quite straightforward. From my initial inquiry through filing the probate papers I received timely, clear instructions on what I needed to do. They were absolutely my partners in this process and all of their support is greatly appreciated. I would advise anyone that needs the services of the Passaic County Surrogate's Court to reach out via e-mail and just ask them what to do. That is what I did and the staff members I dealt with were great, even calling me when I missed a form so I wouldn't lose much time. A big sincere thank you to Ms. Assaf, Ms. Lora and Judge Toledo.
