This is how you close a WhatsApp account when someone dies

WhatsApp is an app-based messaging and voice-over-Internet service focusing on connecting people in different countries.

‍

Required Information
  • Access to phone
  • Phone number

How to close a Whats App account
  • Log on via the app and select “Menu”
  • Then choose “Settings”
  • Hit “Account,” then “Delete My Account”
  • Add the associated phone number (including country code) and tap, “Delete My Account”

What if I don't have the required information?

WhatsApp doesn't have a policy nor webpage devoted to this subject, but recommends contacting them via this WhatsApp Support page. After sending your message with your name and email address, be ready to provide the following when they respond:

  • Account username or phone number
  • Copy of the Death Certificate
  • Proof of your capacity as representative/executor

These instructions also apply if you cannot access the deceased user's phone.

Atticus' Legacy Review of WhatsApp closing account process after someone dies = 4/10 stars

WhatsApp gets okay marks for Atticus' Legacy Review of their closing account process after someone dies, as it's a pretty easy process whether you have login information or not. Unfortunately, they don't have their policy written clearly in their Terms of Service and don't have any web pages devoted to the subject. They also don't have any legacy functions. Hopefully, after receiving this less than perfect mark they'll write one for their clients.
