About visiting the probate court

About visiting the Bergen County Justice Center

The term probate court is a common term loosely referring to the probate division located within a state or county courthouse. In the state of New Jersey, the Surrogate Court is the level of court responsible for overseeing matters related to probate court.

Bergen County Justice Center is listed as a registered probate court within Bergen County, New Jersey.

In most instances within New Jersey, there is at least one Surrogate Court courthouse location within each county. Sometimes a county may have multiple courthouses and may also have multiple probate court locations. Such is often the case in larger metropolis counties where population is dense or also in spread-out, rural counties, which may use a courthouse annex or satellite office system to accommodate nearby citizens with easier access in proximity or distance.

About visiting the probate court

Who to speak with when visiting the Bergen County probate court

Upon visiting the Bergen County Justice Center, look for signs or directions to the probate division within the main courthouse. Once you’ve located the probate division, make your way to any reception desks and ask to speak with a probate clerk or probate judge. The probate clerk at Bergen County Justice Center may or may not require appointments based upon the busyness of the probate court, so it’s a great idea to call ahead.

Plan ahead to be early in case available parking is limited and be prepared for formal security measures upon entering the building, as courthouses are official state and federal property. This generally includes passing through metal detectors and allowing search of any belongings.

Many courthouses do not allow cell phones, so keep that in mind as your phone may need to be turned off upon entering the courthouse, or even left outside.

I have been dealing with a civil case for over a year now. There have been multiple reschedulings, and I have taken 4 days off for these proceedings but so far there has been 0 progress on my case. Each time I have showed up for a proceeding, I am told the staff cannot locate my documents so the whole case needs to be rescheduled. These documents were sent to a court staff member by e-mail, so I'm not sure why they can't just be reprinted but when I suggest such an option I am almost yelled at by someone so I just do as I'm told (last thing I want to do is jeopardize the status of my case that's been going on for so long). In addition, every time someone is supposed to give me a call back, I never get one back. Same thing with e-mails. When I call to follow up days later, someone different answers and I am given different instructions/information each time. It makes me wonder which instruction/information is or was correct. Given the pandemic, I understand that courts are closed to the public and may not run as smoothly, but the incompetence of court staff and their unwillingness to help are unexplained. There doesn't seem to be a set system or a method of communication between offices and the Judge's chambers, and the court staff is very rude to anyone that calls with a question. This is unfair to every self represented litigant out there who may not be familiar with the court's procedures (also not made very clear on their website, which is rarely updated). Sadly, this review will not make a difference, but I really wish the court would set up a better system and kindly remind the court staff to respond or get back to self represented litigants who may be waiting for days to get a call or e-mail back.

Bergen county pretrial services is a very good program after going through this process I completely support Bail reform I believe pre trial services will clean up the streets now that Bail reform is in process and making progress with bail criminals go right back on the street and start up their organizations with bail reform and pretrial monitoring they do not have a chance to do that our streets need to be cleaned up also there are two very professional compassionate people that work there in pretrial services one is Glenn and one is Caitlin they go above and beyond to make sure the defendant is doing what they're supposed to and also making sure all their needs are meant they definitely deserve recognition Sincerely, Peter Anthony Giovenco III

The small claims court is run by bribery and the judges have Italian connections if you know what I mean where usually they are bribed or have friends as lawyers and will not even hear your case because they already know outcome since they have been bribed or have a good connection with a lawyer they know. This place is run by some agenda and bribery and needs to be cleaned up. Think about the hundreds of cases that were wrongly decided because of this bribery and friendship these judges have, it's all about the money.

Unfortunately, family court judges are horrible. They lack integrity, morals and values. The way they address pro se litigates is unacceptable. They put children at risk and in harms way as they cannot be bothered to look at evidence and often side with abusers. Please educate yourselves with current research and not base your decisions on myths and opinions. Do your jobs and put children’s best interest first!!!
