About visiting the probate court

Who to speak with when visiting the Umatilla County probate court

Upon visiting the Umatilla County Circuit Court - Hermiston Branch, look for signs or directions to the probate division within the main courthouse. Once you’ve located the probate division, make your way to any reception desks and ask to speak with a probate clerk or probate judge. The probate clerk at Umatilla County Circuit Court - Hermiston Branch may or may not require appointments based upon the busyness of the probate court, so it’s a great idea to call ahead.

Plan ahead to be early in case available parking is limited and be prepared for formal security measures upon entering the building, as courthouses are official state and federal property. This generally includes passing through metal detectors and allowing search of any belongings.

Many courthouses do not allow cell phones, so keep that in mind as your phone may need to be turned off upon entering the courthouse, or even left outside.

Found out when I tried to renew my license in my current state that I had something outstanding in this court from 2006, when I was passing through helping my sister move across country. I remember attempting to dispute the ticket (because it was B.S., I remember that much) but I couldn't make it back across country to appear in court, and they didn't have my mailing address so I missed anything they may have mailed to me. Even though they have since passed legislation that stops the suspension of DLs for non-payment of traffic violations (or something to that effect, I was just told this by my local DMV) this court still decided to put a hold or something on my license, add a bunch of additional fees and then sell my account to a collection agency in August 2020. 14 years later, during A PANDEMIC. I get that they have their statues and laws that say that they can do whatever it is that they are doing that is messing with people, but that doesn't make it okay. I'm trying to keep my family safe and to keep food on the table during this pandemic and these people are just piling it on at the worst time.

Clerical ladies are rude ! I understand they can not give legal advice.. but there has to be some extent on what they can help you with...and there is no reason to speak in such a rude tone.

The clerical staff here are very unhelpful and rude. They do the least bit to assist with court questions and are very uneducated about the legal process and legal papers needed to file. Horrible. And thanks for the reply but from my understanding they are supposed to be helpful. I never said they needed to help me fill out my paperwork nor did I ask them what forms to fill out, but when asking about a specific form, they are clueless and consistently respond with "Um,I don't know." They work there and therefore should know what forms are available. Then the lady had to look at what forms i brought in just so she could pull the same forms up on her computer(custody responce forms) because she didn't know what forms they were. She had no clue what forms to give me and if I had not brought my copies she would not have known which form to give me. She had me redo my forms that I brought because it was my own copy from portland and she needed my signature(not on a copy) when I clearly could have just resigned the copy right in front of her. I suggest this court house have there staff be trained in Portland. We seem to have it together in Portland and we have staffed advocates to help with other questions daily, while umatilla county only has one advocate available on Tuesdays only. Seriously needs a staffing adjustment and training increased. Seems like it fits the criteria for a small town of small minded individuals🤷
